The move is aimed at ensuring a fair outcome and reducing the chances of key matches being washed out.
Why the Extra Time Rule Was Introduced
In recent weeks, unseasonal rainfall in cities like Bengaluru, Delhi, and Hyderabad disrupted multiple IPL fixtures, including a high-stakes game involving Kolkata Knight Riders that ended in a no-result. How Much Extra Time Is Allowed?
As per the official IPL 2025 update:
- An additional 120 minutes (2 hours) will now be provided to complete rain-hit matches.
- This applies particularly to Eliminator, Qualifier 1 & 2, and the Final.
- If the full 20-over match cannot be completed within the original time plus the buffer, a Super Over will be considered if possible.
- If a Super Over isn’t feasible due to weather or ground conditions, league standings or previous head-to-head results may decide the outcome (as per tournament rules).

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah emphasized that the decision prioritizes both sporting fairness and fan satisfaction. “We want matches to be decided on the field, not by the skies. The extra time rule ensures that weather doesn’t overshadow the spirit of cricket,” he said.
Ground staff at key venues have also been briefed to ensure rapid pitch recovery systems are in place — including extra covers, drainage improvements, and blowers for quick drying.
