IPL 2025: Extra Time Allotted for Rain-Interrupted Matches

As the IPL 2025 playoff race intensifies and unpredictable weather continues to affect match outcomes, the BCCI has stepped in with a crucial regulation update — extra time will now be allotted for rain-interrupted matches, especially in the playoff and knockout stages. The move is aimed at ensuring a fair outcome and reducing the chances of key matches being washed out.

Why the Extra Time Rule Was Introduced

In recent weeks, unseasonal rainfall in cities like Bengaluru, Delhi, and Hyderabad disrupted multiple IPL fixtures, including a high-stakes game involving Kolkata Knight Riders that ended in a no-result. With playoff spots on the line and massive fan interest, the BCCI has implemented this rule to uphold the competitive spirit and integrity of the tournament.

How Much Extra Time Is Allowed?

As per the official IPL 2025 update:

  • An additional 120 minutes (2 hours) will now be provided to complete rain-hit matches.
  • This applies particularly to Eliminator, Qualifier 1 & 2, and the Final.
  • If the full 20-over match cannot be completed within the original time plus the buffer, a Super Over will be considered if possible.
  • If a Super Over isn’t feasible due to weather or ground conditions, league standings or previous head-to-head results may decide the outcome (as per tournament rules).

Focus on Fair Play and Fan Experience

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah emphasized that the decision prioritizes both sporting fairness and fan satisfaction. “We want matches to be decided on the field, not by the skies. The extra time rule ensures that weather doesn’t overshadow the spirit of cricket,” he said.
Ground staff at key venues have also been briefed to ensure rapid pitch recovery systems are in place — including extra covers, drainage improvements, and blowers for quick drying.

What This Means for Teams and Playoffs

With every match carrying playoff implications, this rule could prove critical. Teams like RCB, SRH, and Delhi Capitals—currently fighting for the final spots—stand to benefit as the chances of a washout have now been reduced significantly.
Fans too can breathe easier, knowing that their long-awaited matches will likely go on, even with minor weather interruptions.

IPL 2025 Enters Final Stretch with More Clarity

As IPL 2025 heads into its most exciting phase, the BCCI’s proactive decisions — from venue changes to extended time buffers — are helping maintain momentum and fairness. All eyes are now on how these final games shape the playoff landscape leading up to the Final in Ahmedabad on June 3.
